The thing you need to come to terms with is that nothing... absolutely nothing goes quickly in cases like this - particularly in Greece. I´m feeling the pinch only because when I left Ano Meros, it had started raining and one part of the roof was letting in a lot of water. I still have a lot of paperwork to finish before work can begin. I need a tax number and possibly a permit for the roof and windows. Luckily, a lawyer can do this for me, and I have one not far from the village. Also, Í´m a step ahead now because I've registered our marriage and that means my file is updated in Athens and so I should be able to get my tax number using my Australian passport.
I´ve also got my brother-in-law (who is a terrific architect based in Edinburgh) working on a layout that will work for the house. I had a few surprises and in one of the rooms, the bathroom is taking up valuable space.I need to find the best place for it that makes good flow in the house. I´ve also decided that we will install a staircase inside to connect the two floors together. It will make good sense for our family and friends when they all come to visit.
Everything in the village was nearing harvest or was being harvested when I was there. Almonds, walnuts, tomatoes, lemons, pomegranates, quince, grapes (for wine, raki and just eating) and figs. OMG, it was just so delicious. It is such a community spirit there with all sharing what you have. And everyone is welcome. Anyone and everyone could drop into your house and it gives you a chance to share your food and conversation.
We have two cafes in the village - only one in winter and they offer fresh souvlaki and Greek salad, along with chips (french fries), beer, wine or whatever your drinking. It´s the village meeting place and you might drop in for a quick dinner, but soon everyone else arrives andit becomes a busy place with everyone chatting with each other. I miss this already.
We have a builder and are waiting for him to finish the job he is working on and then he can start on my house. Cross everything for me.
